A Relationship with Jesus Christ

Man Had a Relationship

In the beginning, God created His good earth (Genesis 1:1), and on it, he placed man, the pinnacle of His creation. Man was created in God’s image, meaning simply that man had the ability to choose. What God wanted was a relationship. He loved us and wanted us to love Him, but God knew that love is a choice (Genesis 1:26-1:28).

Man Chose Rebellion

However, man chose rebellion. Instead of a loving relationship with our Creator, we chose rebellion; we chose to rebel against God and His very nature. God is the very essence of good (1 John 1:5), and being created in His image, we know what is good. We know the difference between right and wrong. But everyone of us has knowingly chosen what is wrong. No one has perfectly lived up to the moral standard God has placed in our hearts (Romans 2:12-2:16). This makes us sinners; we have violated God’s law.

God, on the other hand, is holy; He is good and just in every way. We have all committed evil, and this has ruined our relationship with Him (Romans 3:23). His justice demands that our wrongs be punished and made right. Our sin separates us from God and leads to death. Our bodies are dying, and if left in our natural condition, we will face spiritual death by being eternally separated from God in hell (Romans 6:23). This is not the way things were supposed to be.

The Problem with Religion

Man, in an effort to repair the broken relationship and make things right, has developed religion. All over the world, people of every nation and culture have developed moral systems to try to fix our sin nature. The problem with religion is that religious systems do nothing to make right what is wrong. We cannot change the past. Let’s suppose a man committed a serious crime for which there were serious legal consequences, but he was not caught. However, after committing the crime, he is remorseful and reforms his life. He not only avoids bad, but he also does a lot of good. Do these good things make right the crime he has committed? Of course not. Justice has not been served. If caught, he will still be tried in a court of law. In much the same way, we are guilty, and nothing good we do will change our condition (Isaiah 64:6; Titus 3:5).

God Offers Restoration

However, God is not only just, but He is also love. God provided a way to satisfy His justice without violating His love (John 3:16). God’s wrath and the punishment for our sin were all placed on His son, Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ came to earth and lived a perfect life. He did no sin and, therefore, did not have His own sin to pay for. Despite His perfect life, He was killed by being nailed to a wooden cross, and in that moment, the sin of all mankind was placed upon Him, as if it was His own (2 Corinthians 5:21). He died for our sin. That is why He came.

Jesus did not stay dead. After being buried for three days, He resurrected Himself, claiming victory over death (2 Corinthians 15:3-15:8), and He now offers you forgiveness. He offers to forgive your sins and to restore the relationship you were intended to have with Him. All He asks of you is that you turn from your sin (Matthew 4:17) and place your trust in Him to forgive your sin (John 20:31). You can have the loving relationship with God that you were created to have by turning from your sin and asking Jesus to save you from your sin, trusting that He will (Romans 10:13). Will you pray now and ask Jesus to save you from your sin?
